Biswas expresses gratitude to TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee for appointing him as party president
Tripura Trinamool Congress president Pijush Kanti Biswas tendered his resignation from the post and also stepped down from the primary membership on Tuesday. The veteran politician, in his resignation letter addressed to TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, cited personal reasons for his decision.
Pijush Kanti Biswas, who was earlier associated with the Congress party, had resigned from the post of Congress president towards the end of 2022. Alongside him, his son Pujan Biswas, who then held the position of Youth Congress president in Tripura, also resigned over their differences with the Congress central leadership. Following their departure from Congress, they formed their political party. However, before the 2023 assembly elections in Tripura, both father and son joined the TMC.
TMC showed promising results during the 2022 urban body elections, securing more than 16 per cent of the vote in several seats. However, the party’s performance in the assembly election, under the leadership of Pijush Kanti Biswas, was disappointing. They lost the security amount in several major seats contested.
Pijush Kanti Biswas expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the party president. He also acknowledged the party’s general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, for entrusting him with the responsibility.
In a statement, Pijush Kanti Biswas revealed, “I could not dedicate sufficient time to the organization for the last few months due to some of my personal problems. There are some family-related issues. It is not ethical to hold the position of party chief without actively working towards its goals. Hence, I have decided to resign.”
