Triple Murder in Golaghat: Assam DGP GP Singh shares sequence of events

First Published: 25th July, 2023 20:35 IST

A CID team led by SP-level officers has also joined the investigation to assist the local police

A quiet afternoon turned into a nightmare for residents of Golaghat town, Assam, as a family tragedy unfolded on Hindi School Road. Three members of a family, Sanjib Ghosh, Junu Ghosh, and their daughter Sanghamitra Ghosh, were brutally killed in their residence on Monday afternoon.

The accused, identified as Nazibur Rahman, Sanghamitra Ghosh’s husband, later surrendered himself to the police. The accused brought his 9-month-old baby at the time of surrender.

According to the information provided by DGP GP Singh on Twitter, the sequence of events began in June 2020 when Nazibur Rahman and Sanghamitra Ghosh started a love affair after meeting on Facebook. In October 2020, they eloped to Kolkata, prompting Sanghamitra’s parents to lodge a FIR (Golaghat PS Case No. 680/2020 U/S 366 IPC). However, the police managed to recover Sanghamitra and the case was submitted in FR (Golaghat PS FR No. 478 dtd. 04/11/2020).

Trouble persisted in their relationship as Sanghamitra was accused of theft in March 2021, leading to her arrest and 37 days of judicial custody. She was later released on bail and returned to live with her parents. The couple reunited and fled to Chennai in January 2022, staying together for 5 months, during which Sanghamitra became pregnant. They then returned to Golaghat in August 2022 and began residing together in Nazibur Rahman’s house. In November 2022, they had a baby boy.
Their tumultuous relationship continued, and Sanghamitra left Nazibur Rahman’s house in March 2023, alleging torture. A case was registered against the accused (Golaghat PS Case No. 119/2023 U/S 443/325/307/506 IPC), leading to his arrest for 28 days.

Following his release on bail, a tense situation arose between the families regarding his desire to meet his wife and child. Another case was filed against Sanghamitra and her family members on 29/04/2023, alleging assault on the accused (Golaghat PS Case No. 141/2023 u/s 342/325/307/506/34 IPC), which is presently under investigation.
The tragedy reached its peak on 24/07/2023 when Nazibur Rahman allegedly murdered Sanghamitra Ghosh and her parents, leading to the registration of a case (Golaghat PS Case No. 200/2023 u/s 302/448 IPC) that is currently under investigation.

In the aftermath of the horrific crime, a forensic team from Guwahati has arrived in Golaghat to conduct investigations.

A CID team led by SP-level officers has also joined the investigation to assist the local police. A dog squad from Jorhat has been deployed to the scene as well.

Meanwhile, authorities have taken custody of the 9-month-old baby and handed them over to the Golaghat Child Welfare Committee.
