The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief, Swati Maliwal, who is in Manipur since yesterday, visited Lamka (Churachandpur) today to take stock of the situation and the plight of women and children in one of the worst violence hit districts of the state.
She also took stock of the steps taken by Indigenous Tribal Liberation Front (ITLF) to help the women.
“Our main motive is to raise the voice of Manipuri people in front of the rest of the country,” stated Swati Maliwal during the visit.
During the meeting, the ITLF media cell spokesperson, Ginza Vualzong, briefed Swati Maliwal about the cases taken up by the organization concerning violent acts committed against women in Manipur. The discussions centred around addressing the challenges faced by survivors of sexual violence and ensuring they receive appropriate support, including counselling and legal aid.
The DCW chief expressed concern about several women from Manipur who had sought refuge in Delhi to escape violence, prompting her to seek an audience with Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
Swati Maliwal revealed that Chief Minister N Biren Singh had informed her about as many as 100 reported cases of sexual assault in the state. Her objective was to meet with all survivors of these cases and evaluate whether the government had extended support, relief, and counselling to them.
Maliwal was given a warm reception by the leaders of ITLF, including its women wing, upon her arrival in Lamka.
