Manipur viral video: Incident took place just a km away from India’s best police station

Nongpok Sekmai police station in Manipur’s Thoubal district was ranked the ‘best police station in the country’ in 2020

The viral video showing two women paraded nude by a mob in Manipur that sparked worldwide outrage, took place just a kilometre away from Nongpok Sekmai police station, the police station that was adjudged the best police station by the Government of India in 2020.

As per a special report by India Today satellite imagery showed that the incident took place approximately 1 km away from Nongpok Sekmai police station in Manipur’s Thoubal district.

Each year, the Government of India recognizes the best-performing police stations across the country based on several performance indicators including performance of the police in handling cases of crimes against women and weaker sections.

The viral video incident has now brought the police station under scrutiny.

The incident took place on May 4, however it came to light on July 19, after a clip of the incident went viral on social media.

So far, five people have been arrested, and the police have launched a manhunt to nab the remaining culprits involved in the crime based on the viral clip.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh has taken personal interest in monitoring the search operations, emphasizing the government’s commitment to bringing all those responsible to justice.

The first arrest was made the day the video surfaced, July 19.

The key accused, identified as Huriem Heradas, aged 32, was arrested in Thoubal district. The police were able to identify and track him down with the help of the video, in which he was seen wearing a green T-shirt at the time of the incident.
