Meghalaya CM’s big announcement: Shillong to get a Police Commissionerate soon

CM Sangma said that the main idea is to ensure proper law and order in Shillong
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today informed that capital Shillong will soon get a a Police Commissionerate. Chief Minister Sangma’s statement assumes significance in the backdrop of the attack on cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh’s residence.
Chief Minister Sangma briefing newspersons said,”Basically if you look at any of the largest cities and the capitals in different states, most of the cities have Commissioner of Police, so in SHillong we are still at the SP level. Once a Commissioner comes here, it means there will be a senior officer who will be heading that Commissionerate. Of course there will be many more staff and team under him or her.”
According to Conrad Sangma this will ensure that there is a better structured team in Shillong to maintain law and order.
“We are working on it very swiftly and we hope that very soon this process will be complete,” the Meghalaya Chief Minister added.
A number of sporadic incidents have been reported from Shillong recently.
On July 12, Meghalaya cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh’s residence was attacked by unknown miscreants, which has raised questions on the prevailing law and order situation in the state.
On July 7, in yet another incident arson incidents were reported after 2 vehicles including a police vehicle were set ablaze following an altercation between 2 groups.
The faceoff between the two groups took place at around 1:30am today in the Laitumkhrah area of Shillong.
