ATSUM demands immediate arrest and severe punishment of all the perpetrators without any bias

The United Naga Council (UNC) and All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) have strongly condemned the horrific act of disrobing, parading nude and gang raping one of the two women in Manipur on May 4.

In a condemnation note, UNC said, “With our heads hanging in shame and distress, the United Naga Council strongly condemns the inhuman act meted out to the Vaiphei women who were stripped naked, groped and paraded in a broad daylight on the highway towards a paddy field that outrages the modesty of the two innocent women by a radicalized Meitei mob in the cruelest manner on the 4th of May 2023 at B. Phainom village, Manipur.”

It said, “The beastly act of sexually assaulting right on the nose of the law-enforcing agency and unleashing a reign of terror has shattered the basic principles of democracy. The prestige and dignity of our mother, daughter and sister wrecked beyond redemption. Horrifying act and humiliation has replaced the beauty of womanhood. We can never allow the perpetrators involved in such a heinous crime to go scot free.”

Adding that the State Government must initiate necessary steps for the immediate arrest of all the people involved in such dehumanizing crime and should ensure a trial in the fast-track court to deliver justice instantly, UNC said that the perpetrators involved in committing a shameful act should be given befitting punishment to ensure that justice is delivered.

ATSUM in its condemnation note stated that the it is thunderstruck to learn such an inhumane and barbaric act being perpetrated against two innocent tribal women who were never involved in the current violence.

ATSUM said that the credibility of the state administration in maintaining law and order in the state is highly questionable as to why and how such horrific atrocities can be allowed to be committed right in front of law enforcers.

ATSUM also said that the gravest part of the whole episode is that even though a complaint about the incident was filed at Saikul police station by B. Phainom village chief on May 18 and a local news portal published the story on June 4, the Manipur state police registered an FIR only after the video footage of the incident surfaced on 19 July.

The union demands immediate arrest and severe punishment of all the perpetrators without any bias as per law.

It further said that the state administration should bear moral responsibility for having failed to prevent the shameful crime and delaying taking up the case.

A viral video has been in circulation for the past few days of a mob dragging two women who were already stripped by them earlier.
The video demonstrated the scale and nature of the ongoing violence.
The viral video is reported to be of May 4, the early days of the ethnic strife in Manipur that started on May 3.
