In an effort to strengthen the policing system in the state, the Meghalaya government has appointed over 1000 new police personnel.

A total of 1,010 new recruits of Meghalaya police received their appointment certificates today.

CM Conrad Sangma handed over the appointment certificates to the new recruits during a ceremony.

Speaking at the event, CM Conrad congratulated the new recruits and urged them to be fully prepared as the real work will begin the moment they received the appointment certificates.

He also said that within 6 to 9 months, the state government will fill up the vacancies for almost 2,000 vacancies in the police force.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma also responded to a query on whether his government has stepped up measures to prevent crime against women in the state.

The recruitment of the new police personnel comes amid the row over a Reservation Policy, with various groups particularly the Voice of People’s Party (VPP) seeking for proper government action.

In his response, the Meghalaya Chief Minister said,”Yes it is a very serious matter and of course we have seen that crime against women has been there. It’s been there for sometime and measures are being taken. We are ensuring that more and more police force having women are there. We are also moving very fast in ensuring that proper chargesheets are put in at the earliest. Strict steps and measures are being taken from our side.”

As per inputs, over 600 cases of crime against women have surfaced in the state in the last 1 year, which also includes 78 alleged rape cases.
