At least one CRPF personnel was severely injured and 3–4 police personnel were hurt after an angry mob stormed the streets of Silchar in Assam last night to protest the killing of a 19-year-old girl in Cachar.

The protesters started picketing at Rangirkhari Point in Silchar with the dead body of the deceased, demanding immediate action against those who were involved in this heinous crime.

The police had to resort to 2-3 rounds of blank firing, and lathi charge to disperse the mob after they started pelting stones at the police personnel.

A vehicle is also learned to have been damaged in the scuffle.

A heavy security force has been deployed in the area to control the situation.

The body has been handed over to the deceased’s family, and the body has been disposed of by the family members.

Cachar SP Numal Mahatta told North East Live that the situation is under control and the police are patrolling the area so that no untoward incident takes place.

The SP added that the family members of the deceased are cooperating with the police in the investigation process; however, a group of irate mob took the deceased’s body and staged a protest.

“Everything is now under control. In the morning, we visited the place of occurrence, from there, we went to Silchar Medical College and met the family members. They said they had faith in the police on the investigation, they were all cooperating, but when the dead body was handed over to the family members, some people came, and without the consent of the deceased family, they took the dead body to the road and they tried to have a demonstration,” SP Numal Mahatta added.

“When the dead body was taken to the vehicle for last rites, the people started pelting stones at the police and the administration. We have dispersed all the miscreants who were moving around. The situation is now peaceful. The police are patrolling in the entire area,” SP Numal Mahatta further added.
The SP informed that they have arrested some persons involved in the violence and are interrogating them.
