Hunger strike not a healthy approach: Meghalaya Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is to visit Tura on July 24 to assess the situation
In response to the hunger strike initiated by Achik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK), Meghalaya Cabinet Minister, Dr Ampareen Lyngdoh, expressed concerns about the health implications and urged people not to adopt hunger strikes as a trend.
Dr Lyngdoh stated, “We wish that people shouldn’t resort to hunger strikes as it is not a healthy approach. Moreover, this shouldn’t become a trend, causing problems even if individuals or groups are protesting. We acknowledge the significance of demands raised by various groups for addressing specific issues.”
Regarding the ongoing debate on the roster system, Dr Lyngdoh emphasized that the decision had been made collectively with the involvement of all stakeholders. She mentioned that extensive consultations had taken place across the state, and the new roster had already been implemented.
Dr Lyngdoh further added, “These groups must understand that the roster system is of greater significance than they might perceive. It would be incorrect to reconsider a decision that was collectively agreed upon by all stakeholders. We regret to inform that it is highly unlikely that the decision can be reviewed. I want to highlight that the Chief Minister will be visiting Tura on July 24 to assess the situation.”
The hunger strike launched by ACHIK aims to draw attention to their demands, although the Cabinet Minister emphasizes the importance of exploring alternative avenues for addressing grievances rather than resorting to such extreme measures.
