Iconic Durand Cup trophies hosted in Guwahati, to tour Shillong and Aizawl too

The Durand Cup Trophies will be on display in Guwahati till July 17 and will also be taken to Kokrajhar, Shillong and Aizawl

It was indeed a momentous occasion today as Guwahati hosted the three iconic Durand Cup trophies that represent the Asia’s oldest football tournament.

The trophies were unveiled in presence of GOC-in-C Eastern Command Lt General RP Kalita, Assam Sports and Assam Youth Affairs Minister Nandita Gorlosa and a host of other dignitaries.

Eastern Command GOC-in-C Lt General RP Kalita said that the main idea to bring the Trophies to Northeast is to promote sports among the youths.

Lt General RP Kalita said, “We are here to talk about sports, we are here to promote and encourage participation of the young population of Northeast in sports. We are here to talk about bringing football at the highest level to Northeast so that our youth can get motivated and encouraged to take up sports as a career. That is why we brought Durand Cup to the Northeast starting from last year.”

After the unveiling of the Trophies, the same were flagged-off for a tour of the city’s landmarks for the next three days. The Trophies will be on display for the public at the State War Memorial on July 15 and 16 and at the Cotton University on July 17.

The Trophies will also be taken to Kokrajhar, Shillong and Aizawl.

The 132nd Durand Cup begins on August 3 in Kolkata with the final match to be played on September 3.

The 2023 edition of Durand Cup will have 24 teams, up from 20 in last edition, including all 12 Indian Super League ISL sides. Service teams from neighbouring foreign countries of Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal will also be participating in the tournament.

The iconic Durand Cup trophies are on a mega tour in the Northeast before the football extravaganza kicks-off in Kolkata on August 3.
