Noted Assamese singer Sudakshina Sarma, sister of legendary singer late Dr Bhupen Hazarika died today following a prolonged illness. She was 89.
The veteran singer breathed her last at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Guwahati at around 8:25 am today.
As per inputs, the melody queen was suffering from aspiration pneumonia with sepsis and pressure sores for a long time.
Born in Guwahati in 1934, Sudakshina (Queen) Hazarika was the younger sister of the Bard of Brahmaputra and Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika.
After she married lyricist and music composer Dileep Sarma, her father-in-law gave her the name “Sudakshina”.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condoled the demise of the singer and prayed for the eternal peace of his departed soul.
“I am saddened by the news of the death of the prominent singer Sudakshina Sarma. She enriched the field of Assamese music and delivered several heartwarming songs. Her demise is an irreparable loss to the cultural and social sphere of the state. I pray for the eternal peace of her departed soul and convey my deepest condolences to the bereaved families,” CM Sarma tweeted in Assamese language.
