Mizoram on Thursday celebrated 37th anniversary of Mizo Peace Accord. In a nostalgic trip down memory lane, an exquisite photo exhibition commemorating the 37 years of the historic Peace Accord was inaugurated by Information and Public Relations Minister Lalruatkima at the premises of Vanapa Hall in Aizawl.
The exhibition provided a captivating glimpse into the rich tapestry of Mizos’ lives in bygone eras while also highlighting significant milestones such as the signing of the historic accord, the heartfelt homecoming of Mizo National Front cadres, and the memorable visit of then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and his family a few days after the signing of the peace agreement.
The exhibition was timed to precede Remna Ni (Peace Day) on Friday, June 30.
With the passage of 37 years since the momentous signing of the Peace Accord, the era of ‘Rambuai’ (20-year-long Mizoram insurgency period) and the circumstances leading up to the accord have become a chapter of history for today’s generation.
The photo exhibition aimed to bridge this generational gap, offering younger visitors a vivid visual portrayal of the past while evoking a strong sense of nostalgia for those who lived through those transformative times.
The event, a collaborative effort by the Information & Public Relations Department, Mizoram Journalist Association (MJA), and Mizo Photographer’s Society (MPS), presented a remarkable collection of over 100 photos.
Each image served as a poignant reminder of Mizoram’s arduous journey towards peace and the indomitable spirit of its people.
In his recollection of the monumental day, Lalruatkima emphasized the historic significance of June 30, when the Indian Government and the Mizo National Front (MNF), under the leadership of Laldenga, signed the peace accord that brought an end to two decades of insurgency in Mizoram.
He lauded the successive Mizoram governments and the resilient people of the state for cherishing and upholding the accord, resulting in the lasting peace that has characterized Mizoram’s trajectory ever since.
Stressing the importance of peace for the world, Lalruatkima aptly described Mizoram as an “island of peace in the sea of turbulence.” He went on to liken Mizoram to a revered “Jerusalem” for the Zo ethnic tribes and said it is the moral obligation of the government, churches, and civil societies to provide sustenance and refuge to their kindred seeking solace within the state’s borders.
As Remna Ni, or Peace Day, dawns. Lalruatkima expressed the hope that this occasion would foster harmony among families, friends, and communities, further strengthening the prevailing peace in Mizoram.
