Fresh violence in Manipur, miscreants open fire in Imphal East-Kangpokpi border

Fresh incidents of firing and violence have been reported from Manipur this afternoon. According to the Spear Corp of the Indian Army, armed miscreants opened fire in areas of Urangpat and Yiangangpokpi (YKPI) located in the border of Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts.

“Group of miscreants sneaked into the area from YKPI towards hill side today afternoon. Miscreants firing automatic weapons towards villages of Urangpat and Gwaltabi,” an army tweet said.

Security forces deployed in these villages promptly retaliated “in calibrated manner to avoid any collateral damage”. The Army further said that a large number of women protestors tried to block the movement of additional security columns. Army on its part blocked the National Highway 2 to stop the entry of armed miscreants.

Over the past two days Manipur reported five incidents of violence –
In the first incident, an IED blast occurred in South of Kwakta in Bishnupur district. The IED was kept inside an SUV which was parked over a culvert between Kwakta Ward Number 7 and Phou-gak-Chao. The blast left an eight-year-old boy and two teenagers seriously wounded.

In the second incident, another incident of firing was reported from Kangpokpi district. Unidentified miscreants fired several rounds towards Harothel at around 5:30 PM. Intermittent firing was reported again at around 2-3 am this morning.

In the third incident, firing was reported from the Imphal East district. Miscreants opened fire using automatic small arms near Urangpat North of YKPI at 5:45 PM, informed sources said.

In the fourth incident, another firing took place towards N Boljang village which is South of Kangchup. Assam Rifles retaliated and brought situation under control.

In the fifth incident, the Sawonbung-YKPI road axis was also blockade by Meira Paibis at multiple locations in Imphal.

In another development, Assam Rifles troopers, in a joint operation with Manipur Police (Commando) recovered Mortar HE Bomb from General Area Mongjam Foothills, Imphal East, Manipur.
