TIPRA Motha has decided to launch an agitation to press for its demand for greater Tipraland and the long overdue elections for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) village council.
TIPRA Motha and chief Tripura Royal Scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, while addressing reporters at the Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala on his arrival from Mumbai today, said that the demand for Greater Tipraland is not party-specific but constitutional and essential for the better future of the tribal community.
“Demand for Greater Tipraland is not party-specific, it is constitutional. We are being insulted in our own state and we can not even write any examination in our own language,” said Pradyot Debbarma.
Speaking about the delay in holding the TTADC village council elections, Pradyot alleged that despite holding other elections such as the Assembly elections, By-elections, and Urban Body Elections, the village council elections have been delayed for over two years.
“Earlier, the government cited various pretexts, including the Coronavirus outbreak, and the inclusion of Mizoram Bru refugees in the voter list as reasons for the delay in holding the village council elections. It promised to hold the elections after the Assembly elections and Municipal elections but did not do so. The government is delaying the village council elections intentionally to keep the tribal people in a state of poverty, ” said Pradyot Debbarma.
He also slammed the ruling BJP government over the promises it made in TTAADC areas prior to the Assembly polls.
Debbarma cautioned that if the government fails to address the issues faced by the tribal community, the indigenous people will very soon take to the streets and launch a massive protest against this.
He also raised the issue of adopting the Roman script for Kakborak language, which the state government has been unwilling to accept.
