2 Assam colleges to be upgraded to universities: Education Minister Ranoj Pegu

As many as two autonomous colleges in Assam — North Lakhimpur College and Sibsagar College will be upgraded into Universities soon, said Education Minister Ranoj Pegu talking to media in the sidelines of two-day conclave on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) in Guwahati today.

The Assam government has allocated Rs 10 crore for each of the colleges to upgraded into universities including infrastructure upgradation, said Minister Ranoj Pegu.

Minister Ranoj Pegu said that the new Universities in the state have been given a total of Rs 50 crore each for infrastructure development, while central universities Tezpur University, Assam University and Silchar University were given Rs 15 crore each. The Gauhati University was given Rs 25 crore.

Additionally, 15 state run Universities will introduce 4-year Under Graduate (UG) courses from this academic year under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, as directed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, said Minister Ranoj Pegu.

Earlier, speaking at the event, CM Sarma requested people from academics to use simple terms to explain the framework of NEP so that students do not get overwhelmed.

CM Sarma aslo said that he wants Assam to become a centre for education for Eastern India and entire Bharat (India).

“I don’t want Assam to be an educational hub just for the North East. I want our state to become a centre for education for Eastern India and the entire Bharat. For this, we need 50 per cent of our universities to come in the top 100 rank,” CM Sarma tweeted.
