Assam shuttler Ashmita Chaliha wins women’s singles title at Maldives International Challenge Badminton Tournament

This is first international title of 2023 for Ashmita who is ranked 46 in the world

Assam shuttler Ashmita Chaliha lifted the women’s singles title in Maldives International Challenge Badminton Tournament 2023 trophy on Saturday.

It was an all-Indian competition in the women’s singles, with third-seeded Ashmita Chaliha defeating fifth-seeded Tasnim Mir to claim the trophy. Ashmita made a comeback after dropping the opening game to win the last match.

Ashmita Chaliha defeated Tasnim Mir in the final 19-21, 21-17 and 21-11 in the final to clinch the title.

This is first international title of 2023 for Ashmita who is ranked 46th in the world.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the third-seeded shuttler for winning the title.

“Heartiest congratulations to Ashmita Chaliha on winning the Women’s singles title at the Maldives International Challenge badminton tournament. You have made Assam and India proud through your feat! Wishing you good luck for your future endeavours,” CM Sarma tweeted.

Ashmita Chaliha will also represent India in the forthcoming Asian Games scheduled to be held in Hangzhou in China from September 23-October 8, 2023.

Ashmita was born and brought up in Guwahati. She began playing badminton at the age of seven and trained at the Assam Badminton Academy under Indonesian coach Edwin Iriawan and India’s Suranjan Bhobora.
