You have seen drop boxes for used clothes, woollens, suggestions and complaints, for donations etc. But have you ever seen a drop box with a label that reads, “Please drop your snatched weapons here. Feel free to do so”.

That is exactly what the Manipur Government has done to recover the stolen weapons. The state government came up with this unique idea as just about 896 arms and 11,763 ammunition and 200 bombs of different kinds have been recovered to date against the 4,000 weapons and around 5 lakh rounds of ammo which was stolen during the violence last month.

One such drop box was seen in Imphal East’s Khurai area near the residence of Manipur Minister L Sushindro.

Interesting to note that people have used the drop box and dropped weapons which they had stolen. The box is obviously under strict vigil of the security personnel.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Manipur CM N Biren Singh had earlier appealed to the people to return the stolen arms and ammos. Combing operation have started to recover the stolen weapons in a bid to restore peace in the state that has been witnessing killings and violence since May 3.
