NLFT militant’s father goes to collect extortion money, lands in police net in Tripura

The police laid a trap to nab the militant based on the WhatsApp call made to the person, a technical assistance, from whom the NLFT cadre had demanded a ransom
Father of a cadre of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militant group who had gone to collect extortion money as per his son’s instruction, landed in police net. The incident took place in Khowai district of Tripura, a senior police official said.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Khowai Dr Ramesh Yadav speaking to reporters said, “A case has been lodged in the Champahoure police station under Unlawful Activity Prevention Act. It is in connection to the WhatsApp call. The caller identified himself as a NLFT cadre. He demanded Rs 10 lakh extortion charges and threatened that if the money is not paid then shall stop all ongoing works and also kidnap him. On 6th that is yesterday, we had set an ambush and asked the caller to come and collect the extortion amount. We then arrested the person who came to collect the extortion money and he has been identified as one Rajesh Debbarma whose house is under the jurisdiction of Champahour police station and his son is an active cadre of the NLFT since last one year three months.”
The SP added, “He informed that his son and few other cadres had asked him to collect Rs 10 lakh from the technical assistance. His interrogation is being conducted in the Champahour PS where case has been registered under 120 B, 386, 506 beside 10 and 13 UAPA.”
Police is interrogating him to ensure if there have been other similar incidents of collection of extortion and who all are involved in the case.
The SP assured that there is no threat from the NLFT militants as they are very weak at present and are just trying to collect money for their survival.
