First Published: 7th June, 2023 20:49 IST

The timings for classes have been changed for both government and private schools, and the order will be in effect until further notice

In the wake of rising temperatures, the North Garo Hills district administration in Meghalaya has ordered all schools in the district to reschedule the timings of classes from morning 7:30 AM to 11 AM with immediate effect from today to avoid any undesirable incidents keeping note of all students’ health and well-being on top most priority.

The timings for classes have been changed for both government and private schools, and the order will be in effect until further notice.

At a time when the state is sweltering under extreme heat with raising temperatures and no rains in sight, the state has been reeling under one of the worst power shortages. Certain parts of Meghalaya are seeing power cuts for as long as 10 hours.

The state may also experience power outages in the near future because the Umiam Dam, which supplies the maximum power supply to the northeastern state may close due to a drop in water level, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said yesterday, June 6.

CM Sangma said that the government is concerned about the power scenario in the state.

Power Minister A T Mondal had said that the state government is looking at both short-term and long-term measures to address the power situation in the state.

The minimum level of water required for power generation at Umiam is 3,164 feet. Built in the early 1960s, the Umiam Reservoir is located about 10 km north of Shillong. The maximum water level of the reservoir is 3,210 feet (978.41m).

The minister said that the state at present has the capacity to generate 1.5 million units or less than that as compared to the requirement of 6.67 million units.
