Barely a day after civil society groups and the common people in Kohima took to the streets and even started a signature campaign across the state demanding that the incumbent DGP Rupin Sharma be retained, the Nagaland Governor ordered Sharma to hand over the charge to Additional DGP Renchamo Kikon.
In a notification issued by Home Commissioner R Ramakrishnan, DGP Rupin Sharma was directed to immediately hand over charge to Kikon who has been asked to take the charge in addition to his normal duties.
Only on Monday, civil society groups and commoners started a signature campaign in their bid to press the government to retain the incumbent DGP whose replacement was sought by the state government in a letter to the Home Ministry earlier in March.
In fact, even the state police personnel were rallying behind the incumbent DGP whose removal was sought by the government on grounds that he did not possess the required experience to be posted as the top cop in the state.
However, not withstanding the resistance, the government decided to go ahead with its decision to replace DGP Sharma, a notification in relation to which was issued earlier in the day.
As per reports, the Nagaland government wanted Lungriading, an IPS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre from the 1990 batch, to replace Sharma.
