Indefinite hunger strike by former Mizoram rebels

The indefinite hunger strike by members of the Mizoram Underground Returnees’ Association (MURA), entered its 15th day today.

The MURA which is a group of former Mizo National Front (MNF) rebels are seeking fulfillment of the political agreement made by the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee before the 2008 and 2013 Assembly elections.

The MURA members have been on a hunger strike since June 6, demanding that the Lal Thanhawla-led state Congress fulfill 10 points of its political agreement reached with the association before the 2013 election.

Around 30 members, some of them aged around 70, were on a hunger strike, lying on the floor of the association’s office.

The Congress had promised to rehabilitate MURA members and has till date allotted plot of lands to only 45 members in comparison to 3500 members.

According to the agreement, MURA members and their next of kin are to be offered government jobs and Muster Roll employment which is yet to be fulfilled.
