Fresh firing in Manipur: BSF jawan martyred in fresh shootout in Sugnu and Serou areas of Kakching district

The Army said an intense search operation is on to nab the armed gunmen who carried out the firing.

Encounters continue in Manipur despite the presence of over 40,000 Army and paramilitary troopers on the ground, a trend that has kept the state government on tenterhooks.

A BSF jawan was martyred while 2 Assam Rifles personnel sustained gunshot wounds during a shootout in the Sugnu and Serou areas of Kakching district. The injured Assam Rifles troopers have been shifted to an Army base hospital in Mantripukhuri. The Army said an intense search operation is on to nab the armed gunmen who carried out the firing.

Security sources said the presence of more than 3000 looted weapons in the hands of civilians is a cause for worry. An estimated 4000 Insas and AK 47 rifles had been looted in course of the violence in Manipur besides around five lakh rounds of ammunition. Of these, close to a thousand weapons have since been recovered or handed over by those who had looted them.

A top security official said, the main focus of the troops on the ground is to disarm the people who are in possession of the looted weapons as that has the potential to keep the situation on the boil.
