Man impersonates SP Cachar, accidentally ends up calling him, gets caught

32-year-old Zaveer Ahmed was having a free run, living bindass after impersonating Numal Mahatta, SP Cachar. The Badarpur resident had allegedly opened an online mobile payment service account in the name of SP Numal Mahatta and was using it to collect money from the people.
However, on Saturday he mistakenly ended up calling the SP Mahatta himself.
Cachar SP Numal Mahatta told Northeast Live that he received a call from the boy impersonating him on Saturday. Mahatta was returning home from Bengaluru when he got the call.
“I got a call. It displayed SP Cachar in true caller. So I asked who was speaking. He said, I’m SP Cachar. I realized that it was a trap call, but I kept talking to him,” SP Mahatta said. Oops! Busted!
Realizing that it was a fraud call, SP Mahatta launched an investigation into the matter and arrested the man on Sunday morning.
“The man works in the Nexa showroom as a driver. The man has a history of fraud cases,” SP Mahattta said.
The Cachar SP said that earlier people had informed the police officer that few people had been asking for SP’s number, however, the number mentioned in the name of SP Cachar in Google is false.
“Earlier, 2-3 people came and informed me that some people had asked for SP’s number on Google. The number mentioned on Google is false. The number belongs to Zaveer Ahmed from Badarpur, who lives in Bengaluru. We have also written to Google,” SP Cachar said.
According to Mahatta, police had received information about a Google Pay account operating for a few months under SP Cachar’s name. The man used to collect money, mostly from the people who were awaiting their passport verification, and used to charge Rs 5000–6000 from the people.
“Through social media, we have alerted the people that it’s a fraud case, but still people continue,” the SP Cachar said.
