Meghalaya power crisis: Govt working on short term and long term plans

First Published: 3rd June, 2023 14:03 IST

The Meghalaya power minister attributed the low water level in the Umiam lake as the sole cause for the power crisis

The Meghalaya government is working on short-term and long-term measures to deal with the severe power crisis that the state is facing. While sharing the government’s plans to address the issue, Mondal said, “We are taking short term, long term measures. We are working holistically to see that this crisis is over.”
“We are planning some short term remedies to cope up with the present scenario. At the same time, we are also working on some long term measures so that in future we are not subjected to such kind of crisis,” the Meghalaya power minister added.
While stating that the demand is increasing at a higher rate in comparison to what is generated, AT Mondal said that the government is also looking into making some power projects operational as early as possible. He hoped that these steps would solve the problem.

AT Mondal said, “the level of Umiam is one of the lowest in the history of Umiam is concerned. The water level is at 3170 ft, another 5 feet down means problem.”
Admitting that the state cannot generate mass power, Mondal said,”All units are spinning for some time, then wait for water to gather, then we go. All stations are like that only.” The minister said that the state at present has the capacity to generate 1.5 million units or less than that as per the requirement of 6.67 million units.
But the government is pinning hopes on abundant rainfall to tide with the crisis as the power minister said,”I can’t say about whether any water has accumulated in the site or not. Yesterday the rain was really good, I thought it will prolong for at least 3-4 hours. But after 15 minutes it was gone.”
