As of May 1, 4,554 names of Bru voters, who have settled permanently in neighbouring Tripura have been deleted. Another 5,848 Bru names are yet to be deleted

Mizoram Chief Election Officer (CEO) Madhup Vyas on Tuesday said that efforts would be made to delete all the names of Bru voters who have settled permanently in Tripura, but are still enrolled in the state electoral roll, by June 15.

In a meeting with the leaders of the central committee of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), Vyas said that he has already issued instructions to district election officers/deputy commissioners of Tripura bordering Mamit district, of Assam bordering Kolasib district and Mizoram-Bangladesh border Lunglei district to ensure deletion of all the names of Bru voters from the voters’ lists in their respective districts.

He said that the instructions were issued in accordance with the arrangements made with senior officials of the Election Commission of India (ECI) led by Senior Deputy Election Commissioner Dharmendra Sharma during their stay in Aizawl on May 25 and 26.

The corresponding deletion requests from the Tripura state election commission through ERONet has been going at a snail’s pace for months altogether and the last update by the state election department was on May 1.

Mizoram election department, as of May 1, has deleted 4,554 names of Bru voters, who have settled permanently in neighbouring Tripura while 5,848 Bru names are yet to be deleted from the state voters’ lists.

While 4,083 Bru voters’ names have been deleted through corresponding requests for deletion received from the Tripura State Election Commission, 471 names of Bru voters have been deleted based on scanned forms received from the Tripura SEC.

Majority of the Bru voters’ names deleted are from Mizoram-Tripura-Bangladesh border Mamit district’s 3 assembly constituencies – Hachhek, Mamit and Dampa.

At least 3,859 Bru voters have been deleted from the 3 assembly seats within Mamit district till May 1, while 463 and 232 Bru voters’ names have been deleted from 3 assembly constituencies each of Assam border Kolasib district and Mizoram-Bangladesh border Lunglei district in south Mizoram respectively.

Efforts have been made by the state election department to delete all the names of Bru voters, who have settled in Tripura following quadripartite agreement reached between the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mizoram and Tripura state governments and various Bru organizations in the relief camps in Tripura on January 16, 2020 in Delhi.
