Assam CM Sarma said that now regional committees will visit the disputed sites, based on which they will submit their reports to their respective Chief Ministers
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma will visit the disputed sites in Assam’s Karbi Anglong and Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills as part of confidence building measure towards the end of June, informed CM Himanta Biswa Sarma after the crucial Chief Ministerial level meet on the second round of border talks between both the states held in Guwahati today.
The meeting today deliberated on taking forward the border talks into the next phase where a push would be made to resolve the remaining 6 of the 12 border areas, which have been categorised as complicated.
Addressing the media after the meeting, CM Sarma said that now regional committees will visit the disputed sites, based on which they will submit their reports to their respective Chief Ministers and after that, he himself and his Meghalaya counterpart will also visit the disputed sites in Assam’s Karbi Anglong and Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills as part of confidence building measure towards the end of June.
In July, after the scheduled visits are done, another review meeting will be held, which will see both the Chief Ministers gather for deliberation.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, on his part, said that they have asked the respective regional committees to visit the disputed sites and gather feedback and analyse the ground situation from the locals and stakeholders.
While expressing confidence that the reports from the regional committees would come in fast, CM Sangma said that the Survey of India will continue to conduct surveys of the disputed sites settled in the first phase.
This is the 1st Chief Ministerial level meeting of the second round of border talks between Assam and Meghalaya.
In the second phase, the two states are looking at resolving differences in Langpih, Borduar, Desh-doon-reah, Block I & Block II, Pisar-Khanduli and Nongwah-Maw-tamur or Garbhanga areas.
In the first phase in March last year, the two governments decided to resolve the dispute in Gizang, Tarabari, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pilingkata, Ratacherra and Hahim – the areas with relatively less critical differences.
Joining Chief Minister Sarma were cabinet ministers Atul Bora and Pijush Hazarika, while Chief Minister Conrad Sangma was accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong and Snaiwbhalang Dhar, cabinet minister Coming-one Ymbone and senior government officials including the Meghalaya Chief Secretary.
