VPP has been firm in its stand on the reservation policy for government jobs. VPP feels the policy is not proportionate to the population
Meghalaya’s opposition party Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) today started its indefinite hunger strike as part of the party’s agitation against the Meghalaya government for its alleged “indifferent” and “adamant” attitude towards its demand to review the Reservation Policy.
“The party had decided that it will launch an agitation in which today we have just started this indefinite hunger strike as a mark of protest against the indifferent and adamant attitude of the government. For failing to accept our demand to review the Reservation Policy. Today we are here to protest against the Government. The hunger strike will continue till the Government responds positively to our demands,” VPP president Ardent M Basaiawmoit told reporters in Shillong today morning.
VPP decided to go ahead with its agitation even as the Conrad Sangma government made detailed presentation to the cabinet last week regarding the Roster system followed by meetings with MDA partners and all political parties.
Bowing to VPP’s demand, the Sangma government had put on hold all new recruitments and job advertisements with immediate effect.
On May 19, the VPP staged a walkout of the all-party meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to address concerns about the current roster system in the state.
The VPP had on May 17, staged a sit-in demonstration against the reservation policy.
The VPP has been firm in its stand on the reservation policy for government jobs in Meghalaya. The party feels the policy is not proportionate to the population.
VPP had reiterated that the base year of implementation must be 2021 or 2022 and not 1972.
