Former Manipur Finance Minister, Chungkhokai Doungel, passed away at a Guwahati hospital on Sunday. He was 82. He is survived by his wife, sons — Manipur DGP, P. Doungel and ADGP Christopher Doungel their wives and children.
An Arts graduate from St. Xavier College, Calcutta (Kolkata) in 1960, he was not only a renowned and a fine Kuki politician but also a prominent Kuki leader. He had served as Minister in different coalition Governments of Manipur. He was fielded by the NCP as its candidate in the Outer Manipur seat in the 2014 general election. His candidature was supported by seven parties from the Left and Secular Alliance.
The mortal remains of C Doungel was brough to Kangpokpi Town where hundreds of locals were waiting to pay their last respect to their much loved leader. Tributes were paid to the former minister at Kuki Baptist Convention (KBC) Centre Church at Kangpokpi.
Members Kuki Inpi, Kuki Students’ Organization, Thadou Students’ Organization, Kangpokpi Town Committee, Kangpokpi Christian Church, Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council, Kangpokpi, the Assam Rifles, etc. held a brief condolence ceremony to pay their last tribute.
The 22 Assam Rifles Kangpokpi Post Commander, Major Rahul, on behalf of the Assam Rifles fraternity wrapped a traditional shawl and a garland to pay tribute to the departed soul.
Later, the deceased was taken to his native village at C. Aisan in Saikul for his funeral where he was buried with befitting honour.
