As per the preliminary investigation by the forest department, the rhino is suspected to have died due to old age
Amid the Assam government’s crackdown on poaching, a carcass of a rhino was recovered near Borkhe forest camp inside the Orang National Park on Saturday.
However, as per the preliminary investigation by the forest department, the rhino is suspected to have died due to old age.
Assam DGP GP Singh during a press conference said that that Assam police have taken collective measures to eradicate rhino poaching in the state.
He also stated that earlier, multiple cases of rhino poaching incidents were reported in Assam, however not a single poaching activity was witnessed last year.
“This year there was a report of a rhino death in Kaziranga; however, it was not established as a poaching case. The horn was found to be chopped off, but there was no bullet injury. The forensic evaluation regarding the same was shared with the Assam police,” DGP GP Singh said.
The Assam DGP also assured that he would take stern action against culprits found to be involved in rhino poaching.
“Wherever such incidents occur, Assam police will not spare any effort to improve the police system as well as service delivery to the people,” DGP GP Singh said.
Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state government will step up its anti-poaching drive by increasing the strength of staff members, foresters and forest guards inside the park and add an additional outpost to ensure that no rhino is killed in the Kaziranga National Park.
It may be mentioned here that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 16 conducted a survey of the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve following last month’s poaching incident of a rhino.
Chief Minister Sarma toured the Park and assessed various measures undertaken to eliminate poaching. The Chief Minister has called for increased river patrolling in some parts of the National Park.
