During the meeting, a 24-point charter of demands was raised, asking to formulate a strategy and policy to protect the rights of the LGBTQ community
In a bid to protect the rights of the transgender community, Tripura social welfare minister Tinku Roy said on Friday that the Tripura government is looking at constituting a welfare board for transgender persons residing in the state.
The minister held a meeting with a group of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, queer, and members of the LGBTQ community on their rights and social security to address the issues faced by the community.
During the meeting, a 24-point charter of demands was raised to formulate a strategy and policy to protect the rights of the LGBTQ community.
The minister informed that community members have demanded the government undertake steps to eradicate the social stigma associated with LGBTQ people and constitute a board for them.
“We have tried to make them aware of the composition of such boards, like in other states. Normally, such boards are headed by transgender people, and the policies are implemented by trans people. We are not yet aware of the government’s decision, but the minister made it clear that the government is keen to resolve our problems,” said LGBTQ activist Sneha Gupta Roy.
