Tripura Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh has expressed serious concern over the prevalence of drugs, spike in numbers of drug users, smuggling of narcotics from and through the state.

The Tripura Chief Justice shared his thoughts while launching ‘Project Mukti’ for wiping out the menace of drugs from the society. Addressing a gathering on the occasion, Aparesh Kumar Singh batted for increasing the number of de-addiction centres which provide affordable and quality services.

Singh also highlighted that for countering the menace it is of high importance to generate awareness against drugs abuse among the youths and that all stakeholders must join hands with this purpose.

Besides, he also said that such kind of awareness generation has to be necessarily done covering children, students, women as well as the elders who are either victims of the drugs menace or are affected if any of their family members are into drugs abuse.

Tripura Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh lamented the fact that the number of drug de-addiction centres in the state is inadequate.

He said, “There are only few de-addiction centres in Tripura. More and more de-addiction centres with experienced and qualified professionals from the psychiatric department, doctors and life coaches should be associated with them and should be easily accessible to the general public so that at reasonable cost the addicted can go for treatment.”

Besides, Justice Singh sought for more proactive role of the police as well as the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to ensure that stern actions are being initiated against those involved in the smuggling of narcotics. He also highlighted that the judiciary too has an important role in booking individuals involved in the illegal drugs trade.
