Assam-Meghalaya border issue: Second round of CM level talks expected on May 24, both CMs to visit Block 1 and 2 areas

The second phase of border talks between Assam and Meghalaya is expected to begin on May 24 as Chief Ministers of both the states would be meeting in Guwahati, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said.

He said, “THe Honourable CM of Assam and myself and committee (Regional Committee) members are expected to meet on 24th of this month. So that will be the first meeting that may take place in Guwahati. We are waiting for full confirmation but tentatively both us have agreed, logistics are being worked out and everything falls in place we are expected to meet on the 24th of this month.”
The Meghalaya Chief Minister added that he and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma will be visiting the Block 1 and Block 2 areas after their meeting.
“We have already decided that we will visit both Block 1 and Block 2 areas jointly to send a message of confidence, message of peace and a message of restraint from the both sides, including administration. These are the steps and measures that we are taking,” Sangma said.
Meanwhile, Conrad Sangma expressed his concern about the stray incidents of conflicts between the people of both the states along the inter-state boundary in few areas. He stated, “But as I said that incidents are happening, we are very concerned about them. We appeal for peace and harmony in these areas. But ultimately in order to ensure that we are able to find permanent peace and solution to this border issue is the only way forward.”
CM Sangma said that actions are being taken. “Many incidents are happening and many actions are being taken from both sides. Hence the confidence buiilding step and exercise of both the CMs going to these locations is precisely with that objective to build up the confidence.”
