Tripura will form a committee on Tripura Roman script issue: Tipra’s Animesh Debbarma

Tripura leader of opposition Animesh Debbarma informed that the party had approached CM Manik Saha on the issue and got a positive response

Amid the row over the demand for roman script for Kokborok in Tripura, the Tipra Motha today informed that Chief Minister Manik Saha has assured to form a committee on the issue involving all stakeholders.

Briefing media persons in Agartala today, Tripura leader of opposition Animesh Debbarma informed that the party had approached CM Manik Saha on the issue and got a positive response.

“Last Thursday I submitted a letter to CM Saha to include the Roman script and Bengali script in the CBSE exam question paper,” Animesh Debbarma added.

Debbarma also listed the reasons for the demand for Roman script for Kokborok and the problems faced by the students.

“He (Manik Saha) said that a committee will be formed soon, and he will discuss the matter with all the stakeholders. Based on the findings of the committee, the matter will be resolved,” Debbarma added.

The row over Kokborok script started after a letter from the Directorate of Kokborok and other minority languages advised the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to prepare Kokborok question papers for board exams in Bengali script only.

However, Chief Minister Manik Saha, in a letter to Animesh Debbarma on May 4, wrote, “It may also be noted that the issue regarding direction to students to write answers in Kokborok language compulsorily in Bengali script in some examination centers was also inquired into through the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE), but in the report of the TBSE, it appeared that the allegation is not based on facts. No students were instructed to write the answer in Kok Borook in Bengali script.

Debbarma, speaking on their demand, said, “Let the CBSE prepare the question paper in both Bengali and Roman script. If the Tripura Board of Secondary Education can allow the students to write exams in both scripts, why should students who have been studying in English deprived of attempting the papers in the script they are more comfortable with?”
