Bus conductor Vasanthamma, 52, reportedly quit her job as an assistant in the labour ward in a hospital 20 years ago to become a conductor
Imagine having to deliver your baby on board a road transport bus. This is exactly what happened to 22-year-old Fatima. This young would-be mother from Assam was travelling from Bengaluru to Chikkamagaluru on a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus all by herself. She suddenly developed labour pain.
But Fatima was lucky. The bus had a woman conductor, Vasanthamma. Vasanthamma was prompt enough to notice Fatima in pain and discomfort and she quickly came to her aid. Vasanthamma directed the bus driver to halt the vehicle and requested all male passengers to disembark. And within minutes a baby girl was delivered on board the Karnataka roadways bus.
What came in handy was Vasanthamma’s experience as an assistant in the labour ward of a hospital. Vasanthamma had given up the assistant’s job in the hospital to become a conductor.
Later, Fatima was shifted to a community hospital. KSRTC Managing Director hailed Vasanthamma for her service and assured that the woman conductor will be felicitated in a programme soon.
