The Assam Police has arrested Gene Kelly G Momin, District Transport Officer (DTO) of East Garo Hills district in Meghalaya, for his alleged involvement in a big scam of issuing papers for stolen vehicles.
As per inputs the massive scam has come to light after the arrest of Golam Ali alias Sootoo, a resident of Bhatipara in Assam’s Goalpara district. Acting on a specific tip-off, the police had taken Golam Ali into custody last Tuesday and also seized his car.
During the probe, it came to light that Golam, known to be involved in car trade, was using fake documents for the car which he owned. The police 3 more cars from Golam. During investigation, police found that these cars were stolen and had fake papers.
Preliminary probe indicated that Golam alias Sootoo tampered with the chasis number of stolen vehicles and registered them with new registration numbers in connivance with the EGH DTO and other officials and then used to sell it off.
Goalpara SP VV Rakesh Reddy, sharing details about this breakthrough said, “During thorough checking of Golam Ali and his car, we found 4-5 RCs. Upon verifying those it was found that details were being forged including chasis number, engine number and other details. We also verified with the NCRB portal and seized the vehicles. Many discrepancies were found. During interrogation he (Golam Ali) informed that this was done with the help of the DTO in William Nagar. After gathering evidence the DTO was brought here.”

SP VV Rakesh Reddy further said,”To unearth the nexus, we have to find out the details as to how many such stolen vehicles are with them or if they also have pre-owned cars with them. As investigation will proceed, everything will be clear.”
During the investigation, the Assam Police also learnt that there was a fire incident at the DTO office in William Nagar and police suspect that evidences related to the forgery case might have been destroyed.
SP Reddy in this context said, “We came to know a fire incident was there (in DTO office William Nagar). We have to find it out whether it was a case of an accident or planned act and if any documents or evidences have been destroyed.”
