Back from the jaws of death: A true story from trouble-torn Manipur

First Published: 13th May, 2023 15:01 IST

Stories of hope, horror, heart-break, goodwill and benevolence have been emerging from trouble-torn Manipur as the state gets back to normal

For 22-year old Rakesh (name changed) it was from hell and back, literally.

Rakesh, a daily wage earner, was working with his father and three other labourers at a busy locality in a crowded town.

Rakesh, his father and the others were engaged in work when they suddenly realised that a mob was fast approaching them. Rakesh’s father and another labourer ran for their lives and managed to escape the mob fury.

But Rakesh and two others were not that lucky. They were brutally thrashed and left to die.
The next thing Rakesh knew was, he woke up in a hospital morgue.

Rakesh was dumped in the morgue because his body that was thought to be lifeless, was brought to the hospital.

Luckily for Kumar, he remembered his mother’s phone number after regaining consciousness at the morgue. A benevolent nurse lent him her phone and now Kumar is reunited with his mother. He is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

But, unfortunately for Kumar and his mother, the whereabouts of his father is still not known.
