The Congress’ aspiration to stake claim for government formation by dint of being the single largest party in Meghalaya seems to have received a major blow in Meghalaya. A party MLA from the state’s Ranikor constituency, Martin Danggo has publicly announced that he will join the NPP if the alliance government upgrades Ranikor to a civil sub division.
Danggo made this announcement during a public meeting held at Ranikor soon after chief minister Conrad Sangma assured the public that the Government has decided to consider the popular demand of the people and will finalise the date for the inauguration of the new Civil Sub-Division at the earliest.
In a press conference later, Congress Spokesperson Zenith Sangma maintained that the Congress number of 21 is intact and Danggo is a mature politician who will not take such steps. He further said that no official communication has been made to the party in this regard.
Meanwhile, NPP national president and Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma said there was no political motive behind the decision to upgrade Ranikor. Conrad said, the decision has been taken as people of the area were suffering for a very long time.
Conrad, however, said the people were happy with the decision and MLAs and Congress party workers’ willingness to join NPP was the reaction of the government’s move. He added, even though there was nothing political in the move, sometimes political implications do take place.
