Multinational coffee chain Starbucks made emphatic headlines on Friday for its new ad that appears to have offended certain sections of the internet. The ad, which was released on May 10, is based on the concept of inclusivity and transgender rights.

The campaign titled “It Starts With Your Name” featured a story about how a father accepted his son’s transition to a female identity. Well, no points for guessing that the advert sent the internet into an overdrive as #BoycottStarbucks started trending on Twitter. While some people called it beautiful and heart-touching, others were really not that impressed.

The ad began with a man and woman waiting for someone at a Starbucks outlet. The duo was actually waiting for their son named Arpit. Soon, a woman entered and joined the couple at the table. The woman was actually their child who had transitioned and changed her name to Arpita. The father, who earlier had trouble in accepting the fact, was seen heartily embracing his child’s identity later.

Of course, the commercial went viral online and triggered an array of reactions on social media. Several people supported the advert. However, a majority of people slammed the brand for being too “woke” and soon #BoycottStarbucks started trending on Twitter.

“Seriously, we will deal with our issues when they come up; the last thing I need is preaching by a Western MNC. You take care of serving coffee,” a user wrote.

Another user commented, “What a beautiful commercial.”
