Manipur govt prepones summer vacation of schools and colleges

Summer vacation from May 4-30 for schools and May 15 to June 5 for Manipur University. Situation returning to normal say Manipur Ministers

Manipur government preponed summer vacations for schools and colleges. Schools would remain shut from May 4 to May 30 and the Manipur university would remain shut from May 15 to June 5, Manipur Health Minister Dr Sapam Ranjan and Education Minister Th. Basantakumar said today.

The decision to prepone the summer holidays was taken as the education institutions are being used by the paramilitary forces and security personnel for accommodation.
Over 50 companies of paramilitary forces are stationed in Manipur in the wake of the violence that had rocked the state since May 3.

Briefing the media in Imphal today, the Manipur minsiters said that the situation in Manipur is relatively peaceful now compared to the past few days and added that no major incidents of violence were reported apart from some sporadic incidents in some parts of the state.

He said that at present there are only about 4,000 displaced people in relief camps. The number in such camps is decreasing day by day as people are being transferred to safe destinations including their homes.
The Ministers further said that as many as 216 FIRs have been lodged with regard to the recent incidents of violence and 247 arms and 4,679 ammunition has been recovered so far. 1,930 people, mainly students from outside Manipur, were evacuated safely till today.
