In a horrific incident, a 45-year-old man was lynched to death by a mob alleging goat theft in Tripura’s West district.

The deceased has been identified as Sunil Oraon.

As per inputs, he was found dead with his hands tied to a tree, where the group of villagers have allegedly beaten him to death accusing him of stealing a goat.
The incident took place at Meghliband Basti in the district late Saturday night, May 6, 2023.

Following the incident, the victim’s son registered a murder case against as many as nine persons.

Later, Police launched an investigation into the matter and arrested the nine accused including two women in connection with the case and charged with murder, said Superintendent of Police of West Tripura, Kiran Kumar.

On Monday, May 8, the arrested accused were produced before a local court with a plea for police custody for interrogation.

This is not the first instance of a mob lynching in Tripura. A 26-year-old man who was accused of lifting cattle was lynched to death earlier in 2022 in the Sepahijala area, and similar instances were reported in 2021 at two places in the Khowai area, where three people were allegedly beaten to death.
