In one of the biggest accomplishments in the recent years in its fight against drug and within days of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announcing the setting up of Special Task Force to crackdown on drug peddlers and drug mafia, Tripura Police on Saturday arrested three drug traffickers with 60,000 Yaba tablets worth over Rs six crores from the Tripura-Assam border said police.

The seizure was made by North Tripura district police at Churaibari gate which is the entry point from neighbouring Assam to Tripura.

Bhanupada Chakraborty, superintendent of police (SP) North Tripura district who led the operation said, “We acted on a tip off from Sonamura in which I received details about the vehicle that was moving last night at around 12 AM and today in the wee hours it returned with the consignment.”

Three persons, all residents of bordering Dhanpur in Sonamura subdivision of Sepahijala district of Tripura, who were transporting the drugs have been arrested.

Chakraborty said, “We have arrested three persons. They are Subhankar Debnath, Idris Mia and Rajat Paul. Price of each Yaba tablet is Rs 1000. So the total price of the seized item is Rs six crores. “

He added, “It is not only used as drugs but several crimes take place after consuming these tablets as it instigates one to commit crimes. So it will not only save lives but also reduce crime in Tripura.”

The SP said that police will be interrogating the arrested drug traffickers and also contact with its counterparts in Assam to further investigate the case and nab the gang of drug traffickers involved.

He informed that people of the state want to stop the menace of drug and has been cooperating with the police by providing information and hoped that jointly with the public Tripura will soon be a drugs free state and which is the dream of the Chief Minister Manik Saha who had recently announced that the kingpins involved with drug smuggling should be arrested.

A NDPS case has being registered at Churaibari police station and those arrested are being interrogated to find who are involved with them.

It may be added here that this is one of the biggest haul of drugs that took place in the state in less than a week after the state’s Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha had announced forming a Special Task Force (STF) which shall conduct raids to prevent drug and narcotics trafficking besides arresting the mastermind behind these crimes.
