Tipra Motha has been seeking a constitutional solution to the Tiprasa issue
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is said to have cleared the name of AK Mishra to be the government of India’s Interlocuter for talks with the Tipra Motha, the new tribal political force in Tripura that is seeking constitutional safeguards for the Tiprasa people in the border state.
Highly placed sources in New Delhi told Northeast Live that Mishra has already had at least one round of informal talks with Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Debbarma this week.
An official announcement by the Union Home ministry is expected soon but sources said Mishra is set to visit Tripura next week as part of a familiarization tour. Mishra may meet chief minister Manik Saha as well as Tipra Motha leaders during the visit.
The Tipra Motha shot into political prominence in Tripura with its demand for a greater Tipraland although the party has since been talking of constitutional rights and a constitutional solution to its demand for maximum autonomy for the tribal people who were once a majority in the state, bordering Bangladesh. The Motha is seeking political, administrative and financial autonomy for Tripuras tribals.
Before the just concluded state assembly polls, Amit Shah met Motha leaders in Delhi following which a draft agreement was prepared by the MHA. The draft agreement has not been accepted by Tipra Motha which wants a revamp of the draft to include its core demands.
It is in this backdrop that New Delhi is appointing the interlocutor to hold dialogue and resolve the Tiprasa issue. The Tipra Motha emerged as the biggest regional force in Tripura in the recently-concluded Assembly polls in the state winning as many as 13 seats in its maiden Assembly polls.
The party had in 2018 stumped the people of the state and the political space by winning 18 seats and sweeping the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections leaving just nine seats for BJP. One seat was won by an Independent.
