Assam’s Bihu dance scripted history on Thursday. The northeastern state’s biggest and most loved Bihu dance entered the Guinness Book of World Records this evening. 11,010 Bihu dancers or ‘nasonis’ and drummers or ‘dhuliyas’ danced their way to the coveted Guinness Book of World Records at a mega event held at the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati this evening.

The feat was achieved in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, other ministers of his Cabinet and the Guinness Book representative.

The artistes (8000 dancers and 3000 drummers) who performed, came from different parts of the state. They danced for almost minutes. The Guinness Book representative counted till five and the contest began. The dancers had to beat a record set by 500 Bihu dancers.
The record was created by the 11, 010 dancers in the category of the largest number of Bihu dancers performing at a single venue.
This initiative was the dream project of Assam’s dynamic and visionary Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. His vision was to propel Bihu onto the global stage and get Bihu recognized as an Indian dance form across the world.
Assam’s Bihu dhuliyas too created a Guinness World Record as 3000 Bihu dhuliyas played the Bihu dhol at a single event.

This Rongali Bihu will go down in history for this feat.

Tomorrow the nasonis and the dhuliyas would recreate the feat in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Guinness Book representative would hand over the certificates to PM Modi tomorrow.
What a splendid way to celebrate this Rongali Bihu and ring in the Assamese New Year!
