The Nagaland BJP has backed Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s decision to hold a cabinet meeting on April 6 in a move to discuss the road ahead for holding consultations with different stakeholders including CSOs, Tribal Hohos as well as women bodies before legislation of the new Nagaland Municipal Council.
Nagaland BJP president and a minister in the Rio cabinet, Temjen Imna Along speaking to Northeast Live about the proposed meeting on April 6 said,”I think the honourable Chief Minister and the cabinet has made a very inclusive decision in allowing more time for further discussions and deliberations, so that whenever it happens, it should happen according to the will of the people for the people and I think that is the right thing.”
Along backed this and highlighted that nothing can be much better on a given situation when when the people and the leaders are not coming forward, the various civil societies and NGOs and the people’s representatives in the Hoho, are not coming forward and if they are against the idea.
Meanwhile, Temjen Imna Along hopes that something good will prevail. He said,”I think things will work out in the days to come. It’s just been a month of the new government.”
Earlier, Chief Minister Rio had acknowledged that the people were the real masters and maintained that the state government would not introduce any legislation against their wishes.
Rio said only after holding thorough consultation with the tribal hohos, the state government would come up with a viable Act that could be implemented. He, however, said a deadline could not be given on how long it would take to come up with the new legislation.
It may be mentioned that the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on March 28th had repealed the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 following stiff opposition by different pressure groups including the tribe Hohos stating that they would not participate in the civic body elections unless the state government amends the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 on assertions that the Act infringes Article 371 A of the Constitution of India which grants special privileges to Nagas.
However, contrary to this Nagaland’s most prominent women group, the Naga Mothers Association has opposed the decision of the State Assembly to repeal the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001. The NMA objected to the fact that the government had taken the decision without any consultation with the civil society or in consultation with the women in the state.
Speaking to Northeast Live, NMA Adviser Rosemary Dzuvichu had said that the government has made a mistake by not consulting the women society.
