Suspended Meghalaya police officer GK Iangrai was granted bail on Thursday for all the six charges he was booked for.
Langrai was arrested on 2nd November 2022 based on an FIR for allegedly misappropriating funds sanctioned for the construction of the Nationwide Emergency Response System (NERS) building in Shillong.
Langrai was arrested for his alleged involvement in the illegal supply of dry ration and alleged malpractice in supplying vehicles for Covid-19.
Another three cases were filed against Langrai and an arrest warrant was moved against Langrai before the District and Session Court.
“We have moved anticipatory bail in all those three cases. The court has granted bail in all those cases. Iangrai was granted bail in two cases on Wednesday and two cases on Thursday,” Iangrai’s lawyer informed.
The lawyer also informed that Langrai had complained of some ailments and has not been keeping well. He is currently admitted in a hospital.
Furthermore, the lawyer informed that in all the 6 cases registered against him, none of the cases he has been charge-sheeted.
The Lawyer added that there are fewer possibilities that Langrai will be rearrested as they cannot invoke any other additional charges against him.
However, the lawyer said that the CID can always challenge the bail if they felt aggrieved since the law provides them with that liberty.
“But we are ready to defend Iangrai’s even if the CID decided the bail order,” he added.
The lawyer also informed that many of the cases are in the nascent stage of the investigation.
“Langrai has given assurance to the court that he is not running anywhere and has been fully cooperating,” the lawyer added.
The lawyer informed that they will have to wait for the charge sheet to be filed by CID in the court and then accordingly they will have to prepare their defence.
