Rhino horn recovered in Assam, 3 in police net

The Nagaon police on March 23 recovered a rhino horn and arrested three smugglers in connection to the case

Once again in a successful operation of hunting down rhino horn smugglers, a case was reported from the Rupohihat area where Nagaon police recovered a rhino horn on March 23 and arrested three smugglers in connection to the case.

The arrested persons were identified as Khaliluddin, Jakir Hussain, and Akbar Ali residents of the Rupohihat area.

The three smugglers were arrested from the Ambagan locality in Rupohihat.

Of late, Assam government has been successful in hunting down poachers and no rhino deaths due to poaching was reported in 2022.

As per data shared by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 16, 2022, in the year 2014, 27 cases of poaching were reported followed by 17 in 2012, 18 in 2016, 6 in 2017, 7 in 2018, 3 in 2019, 2 in 2020, and zero in 2022.

On January 23, Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio was impressed with the Assam government’s efforts in stopping rhino poaching and lauded Assam’s accomplishments in putting an end to poaching of the endangered greater one-horned rhinoceros in Kaziranga National Park.

Assam’s Kaziranga National Park (KNP) – located in the floodplains of the Brahmaputra river, in Golaghat district, is the biggest habitat for one-horned rhinos globally and draws visitors from across the globe. The National Park is about 5 hours drive from Guwahati. There is no direct air or train connectivity.
