Children of Notun Village in Assam’s Jorhat district play with bullets fired by Indian Air Force personnel during their training sessions

It is Notun village of Jorhat district of Assam. Villagers here with children are spending their days in fear and panic. It has been raining bullets in this village.

You ask where are these bullets coming from? No these bullets are not coming from any neighbouring country nor have they been fired by any militant outfit. These are bullets that have been fired by the Indian Air Force personnel during their training sessions.

Notun village is located close to the Air Force base in Jorhat. Every time the personnel does their firing exercise, bullets come flying into the village.

“The firing range is situated near our village. When the firing exercise takes place, the bullets hit our roofs, doors. Sometimes the bullets fall on our front yard and backyards. Its bullets everywhere. We have to change our roofs every 1-2 years because of the damage caused by these stray bullets. Also, when the exercise takes place, we don’t allow our children to step out of our homes,” one of the villagers said.

While the villagers are all panic stricken and are requesting the authorities and the Indian Air Force to take necessary measures to protect the children and the people of the village, the children are a happy lot.

They are all smiles and happy as they have started playing with these stray bullet shells.

This definitely is a cause of grave concern because so far the people of Notun village have just got lucky. But a girl had a narrow escape this morning. A stray bullet scrapped past her as she ran to her house for shelter from the bullet shower.

Earlier, the locals had filed a written complaint with the authorities, after which two people came for a survey, and they raised the boundary wall to around six feet, but this has not solved the problem.
