Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh today sent out a strong message and said that his government is seriously monitoring the issue of illegal migrants settling in the state. The Manipur Chief Minister’s statement comes in the backdrop of escalating protest by different pressure groups and students bodies demanding for implementation of NRC in the state and protect the indigenous population.

Briefing newspersons, Chief Minister N Biren Singh pointed out that was good to see that the indigenous people are now aware of the seriousness of the situation.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh said,”I feel now that the indigenous people of Manipur have started knowing the gravity of seriousness of influx. It is a good sign. Why I am telling it because our population is very thin and protection of indigenous people is very important.”

The Manipur Chief Minister clearly said that his government is taking up the matter seriously. Prior to briefing the newspersons, Chief Minister N Biren Singh held a crucial meeting with the concerned officials of the district administrations as well as police for identifying the illegal migrants. In the meeting the Manipur Chief Minister reviewed the preparations for the verification drive to be taken up in 5 districts of- Chandel, Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Kamjong & Pherzawl for identification of illegal immigrants.
“Deliberated on the means for carrying out smooth verification drives,” he added.

The Chief Minister said,”Just before press meet I took a serious meeting for identifying of the illegal immigrants who are residing inside, infiltrated inside the state. We are going to identify at the earliest.”
Chief Minister N Biren Singh said,”I believe that it is the State Government’s bounden duty to protect the indigenous population, and we will take up all necessary means to carry out our responsibilities.”

N Biren Singh also acknowledging the Centre said,”Knowing the uniqueness of Manipuris, even the central government “we are in India, we are within India” but even though Indian government has given us, provided us Inner Line Permit (ILP).”

This indeed is a signifcant development since students including different pressure groups intensifying their agitation for the implementation of NRC in the state. At least 7 students groups staged peaceful demonstration at the national capital today, while agitators had tried to storm into the CM’s bungalow on March 13 and subsequently proceeding towards the Raj Bhawan.
