The Congress has retained the crucial Ampati seat in Garo Hills. In a direct contest between the Congress and the NPP, the Congress won by 3,191 votes.

The victory makes the Congress the single largest party in Meghalaya and perhaps opens the door for some serious political activity in the state.

The Congress was always a favourite to retain the seat, but the NPP had gone out with all its might to try and wrest power from the Congress in the constituency which had been under its rule for 25 years.

The Congress looked comfortably ahead after the first round of counting and even though the NPP led marginally in the second lot, the Congress soon extended its lead to a comfortable margin and eventually won by 3,191 votes.

Former chief minister Mukul Sangma’s daughter Miani D Shira emerges victorious from the constituency beating Clement Momin of the NPP by 3191 votes.
