30, 000-40,000 protesters cannot be drug dealers or poppy cultivators: Sang Vaiphai, KSO general headquarter president
The row over Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s controversial statement terming the protestors who carried out rallies in hill districts on 10th March as poppy cultivators and drug dealers has continued to create a stir among the people of Manipur.
As such, the Kuki Student Organisation (KSO) general headquarter president Sang Vaiphai responding to CM N Biren Singh’s remark said that 30, 000-40,000 protesters cannot be drug dealers or poppy cultivators, adding that if they are really drug dealers and poppy cultivators, then it is the failure of the Chief Minister.
Responding to the Chief Minister’s remark that the rally was a challenge to the constitutional provision, Sang Vaiphei replied saying that it is their fundamental right to freedom to protest peacefully. However, they were denied permission by the Churachandpur SC and 144 Cr PC was declared. He questioned as to whether the constitutional provision was followed by the government.
Also reacting to CM’s comment that the rally was confined to only two districts the KSO general headquarters president said, “The CM has misinformation and he had no interest to gather a fact that the movement is not just confined within two districts. In Churachandpur, it touched every nook and corner, block level, SDO level. The rally was held in Ukhrul, Chandel- Tengnoupal and Kangpokpi district over and above other areas.”
“Knowingly remarking and confined it to 2 districts I think the CM has feelings of some sort of sidelining or playing some political games with the people residing in Manipur” the KSO general headquarters president added.
Lastly reacting to the involvement of the Kuki National Army (KNA) and Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA), Sang Vaiphai said they have no connection and instead it’s the government who tries to sabotage the plan to protest rallies by making phone calls and questioning what rights do they have to derail their plan agitations.
